UN commission for Europe and Israel host workshop on developing agribusiness

The International Workshop on Agribusiness Enterprise Development, which kicked off in Israel yesterday and will run through next Tuesday, aims to acquaint policy makers and civil servants responsible for agribusiness development in their countries with both international and specifically with Israeli experience of agribusiness enterprise development at national, regional and local levels. In rural agricultural sector development, agribusiness entrepreneurship is a key element in assisting and improving rural income opportunities and economic growth. In this context, agribusiness enterprise development is an important factor in promoting sustainable agricultural and rural sector development. These activities constitute a growing phenomenon both in industrial and developing countries.Israel’s own agricultural and rural sectors, both at the national and regional levels including the primary village level, have developed various agribusiness enhancement mechanisms and financing systems. These systems have been developed to support the ongoing specialization and market-driven orientation of the sector, particularly related to high quality and export market production and agribusiness entrepreneurship.Over the last 10 years, Israel has cooperated intensively with the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), generating a solid professional methodological base together with practical agribusiness development at the field level in a wide range of agribusiness entrepreneurship project activities.Representatives from 15 transition economies, including several Deputy Ministers for agriculture and foods, are expected to attend the Workshop, which will focus on recent case studies reflecting Israel’s experiences in overseas technical cooperation programmes in the field of agribusiness development. The programme will combine professional presentations, case studies and lessons, field visits to various agribusiness enterprises of different sizes, and round-table discussions related to topics of priority regarding agribusiness entrepreneurship, support services and management capacity building. read more

UN urges Pakistan to reinstate suspension of death penalty

“It has also been reported that among those executed there are persons who were minors when the offence was committed. According to some estimates, there are more than 8,000 prisoners on death row,” said a statement from the UN office in Pakistan. The UN expressed concern over cases where the death penalty was handed down to minors and welcomed reviews of these cases. “The UN has consistently called for an unequivocal end to the execution of anyone, anywhere, who is convicted of committing a crime when they are under the age of 18,” the statement said. More than 160 UN Member States with a variety of legal systems and religious backgrounds have either abolished the death penalty or do not practice it. Moreover, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein has expressed deep regret at the resumption of executions in Pakistan, stressing that no judiciary – anywhere – can be infallible. There is no scientific proof, according to the UN, that the death penalty serves as a deterrent or contributes to combating crime or violent extremism. “While we appreciate the need for effective counter-terrorism measures to protect people, including children, such action must strengthen human rights and be proportionate and necessary in a democratic society,” the UN said in today’s statement.Under international treaties, in particular the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Pakistan legally committed itself to ensuring due process and not imposing the death penalty.“The UN in Pakistan, therefore, urges the Government to reinstate its moratorium as soon as possible. We stand ready to support it in doing so and to assist in strengthening the existing justice system if so requested,” the statement emphasized. read more

Research aims to keep invasive mussels at bay in Columbia

first_imgInvasive freshwater mussels so far haven’t found a foothold in the Columbia River. That doesn’t mean regional hydropower managers and researchers are sitting idle, waiting for them to show up.A research project under way at the Port of Camas-Washougal aims to make sure the Northwest is better prepared if — or when — the tiny mollusks do arrive.“They’re not here yet,” said Mark Sytsma, a Portland State University environmental sciences professor. “That we know of.”Fast-breeding quagga and zebra mussels have a known track record of causing costly problems elsewhere, notably in the Great Lakes and, more recently, in Lake Mead at the Nevada-Arizona border. They’ve encrusted dam structures, clogged pipes and crowded out other wildlife, requiring millions of dollars in management and mitigation efforts.Local officials worry that mussels could cramp the Northwest’s hydroelectric facilities and irrigation systems connected to the Columbia. They may also crowd fish passage facilities built into the dams. Before that happens, the Bonneville Power Administration and PSU are testing a set of chemical coatings they hope will keep mussels from attaching themselves to the Columbia’s steel and concrete infrastructure. Researchers will finish placing nearly 900 small test panels in the river next week, beginning a three-year evaluation of how the treatment holds up in the water. Later this year, they’ll take panels directly to Lake Mead to see how mussels themselves react to the coating. Researchers will test how much force it takes to get them off the treated surfaces, hoping water current alone might be enough.last_img read more

Alaska senators fault Trumps tack on racist rally

first_imgImage of President Trump from WhiteHouse.govAlaska’s U.S. senators have issued a second round of statements following the rally of White nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia. This time their criticisms are aimed at President Trump.Listen now“What the President said yesterday was wrong,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski wrote on Facebook Wednesday night, a day after the president’s press conference in Trump Tower. “There is no moral equivalence between those who are inciting hate and division, and those who took to the streets to make it clear that those views are unacceptable.”Murkowski previously condemned bigotry and anti-semitism, without mentioning Trump or his assertions that “many sides” were to blame for the violence.Sen. Dan Sullivan’s second Facebook post said, “Anything less than complete and unambiguous condemnation of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and the KKK by the president of the United States is unacceptable. Period.”The senators join a number of fellow Republicans in Congress who say the president should have condemned neo-Nazis and White nationalists more forcefully. This morning, Trump issued a series of Tweets blasting his critics and lamenting the removal of Confederate statues from American cities. In Anchorage on Thursday, Alaska Congressman Don Young declined to answer a question during a press conference with other Western state House members.“Congressman, we’d like to hear your thoughts on the events in Charlottesville,” a reporter asked.“We’re not on that subject right now,” Young responded. “We’re talking about resources. I brought these people up to see it. They’ve seen it. Next!”Young’s spokesman later provided a written statement that said: “I stand united with Americans from across all corners and demographics of our nation in condemning the violence, hatred and bigotry in Charlottesville, VA.”last_img read more
