Christian Aid Week promoted with microsite

first_img Howard Lake | 23 April 2003 | News Christian Aid Week promoted with microsite Tagged with: Digital The microsite does of course include online donation facilities, including online credit/debit card and direct debits. One novel element of the site is that it lists the most recent online gift, including the donor’s name (or initials if they prefer) and the amount. In theory, apart from acknowledging a donor’s gift in public if they wish, this also serves to encourage potential donors by proving that other people are already giving online. This is a very underused method of using giving data – only Comic Relief seems to have published anything similar in the form of its Galaxy of Stars. But even they didn’t list the latest donation in real time. Perhaps other charities will follow this good example. The Christian Aid Week microsite has been designed by Kleber, the new media agency whose clients have included Warp Records, MTV Europe, Kylie Minogue, The Beatles, and Ninja Tune.New Media Age last week judged the new site as “Site of the Week” giving it 86/100. Reviewer Sara Davies said “all in all, a truly complementary offering to the main Christian Aid site.” Christian Aid is using the Web to promote its key fundraising event, Christian Aid Week. This year’s Christian Aid Week runs from 11 – 17 May 2003 and is being supported with a dedicated microsite at The site includes plenty of engaging activities including a writing competition, celebrity content, and an interactive “Herometer”. This will create “a morality map of Britain” through a “a quiz which places you in humorous moral dilemmas.” You can also find local activities throughout the UK.Christian Aid has already been using the Web to generate support for Christian Aid Week amongst its supporters and church contacts. It’s site has been carrying exclusive content and downloadable materials for the Week. Ocean City Bans Smoking on Boardwalk

first_imgA sign at 14th Street marks one of the small designated smoking areas on the Ocean City Boardwalk. City Council on Thursday passed an ordinance that bans smoking across the entire boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ.City Council voted Thursday to ban the use of tobacco products and e-cigarettes on the Ocean City Boardwalk. An existing ordinance had restricted tobacco use to seven small smoking areas spread out across the 2.5-mile length of the boardwalk. While the council passed the second and final reading of the new ordinance in a 7-0 vote, council and administration members acknowledged that the measure likely will just push smokers off the boardwalk to street ends.Speaking for the Boardwalk Merchants Association, Hank Glaser of Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy and Fudge urged council to come up with a plan to accommodate both smokers and non-smokers.“We want to cooperate,” Glaser said of the merchants.Business Administrator Mike Dattilo said common sense would dictate that smokers would gather near the boardwalk entrances, and he said the city would try a couple different approaches to signage, lighting and smoking receptacles to see what works. The ordinance will take effect in 20 days.“It’s not an easy situation for merchants or our guests,” Mayor Jay Gillian said. “We’re all going to work together.”The new ordinance bans smoking along the entire boardwalk, including ramps and stairs.First offenses are punishable with fines of $100 to $250. Fines for subsequent offenses would be $500 to $1,000.The measure passed on first reading on June 12 with full support from council members and no comment from the public.Dattilo had said Ocean City police issue 1,700 to 1,800 warnings a year under the current ordinance but issue few summonses. He said police would continue a policy of warnings for all but flagrant offenders.A bill currently being considered by the state Legislature would ban smoking on beaches but allow individual municipalities to designate up to 15 percent of their beaches as smoking areas.__________Sign up for OCNJ Daily’s free newsletter and breaking news alerts“Like” us on Facebooklast_img read more

Danish engineers’ pension funds agree to pool contributions

first_imgDIP originally covered only civil and academic engineers, while ISP Pension provided plans for technical and diploma-level engineers. Now both funds include all these types of engineers and other science graduates in their memberships.Peter Falkenham, chairman of DIP’s supervisory board, said: “I am extremely pleased with the content of the letter of intent and look forward to further work with the parties.”However, Lars Bytoft, chairman of the ISP supervisory board responded more cautiously, saying it was best for the scheme’s members to wait and see how the planned merger between DIP and the lawyers’ and economists’ pension fund JØP panned out.The DIP/JØP merger is scheduled to take place in 2019.“The merger between ISP and the merged pension fund (DIP and JØP) is expected to occur in 2020, provided that the expected potential of the merger in terms of cost savings can be achieved,” Bytoft said.ISP said it had also received an offer to merge with commercial mutual provider AP Pension, but that this had been rejected. However, ISP said it would continue to employ AP Pension as manager for the next few years.ISP outsourced all its activities to AP Pension several years ago but retained its independence as a pension fund.Danish financial daily newspaper Børsen reported yesterday that the merger would result in more than DKK16bn of pensions assets being taken away from AP Pension. A spokesman for AP Pension said it had no comment on the report. Labour-market pension provision for engineers in Denmark has moved one step closer to unity after the two main industry pension funds signed a letter of intent with the Danish Society of Engineers (IDA).The parties have specifically agreed that, from April next year, all contributions from new members joining the engineers’ pension fund ISP will be directed into the DIP pension fund for the profession.Earlier this year IDA proposed merging the two funds into a new DKK51.1bn (€6.9bn) fund to be called IDA Pension. After talks resulting from that proposal, DIP, ISP and IDA have now signed a letter of intent in which ISP agreed to work to ensure the most economically advantageous arrangements for current and future members in a single pension fund, ISP said.last_img read more

InnTower Invitational arrives in Madison

first_imgAfter three tournaments away from home, the Badgers are finally set to return to the friendly confines of the Field House. The Badgers hope to continue their 12-set winning streak this weekend at the 20th annual InnTowner Invitational, where Wisconsin (6-3) will host Notre Dame (5-3), Western Michigan (9-1) and South Florida (3-5).The Badgers have already competed in the Duke Invitational, the NC State Invitational and the Rhode Island Invitational on their way to compiling a 6-3 record. Highlighting the second-longest road trip in program history was the Badgers’ three-straight victories in Rhode Island, winning them the tournament and a streak of 12 consecutive sets, won after effectively stopping all three of their tournament opponents from winning a set.Sophomore Annemarie Hickey advocated the reformed mindset the team adopted before last weekend’s tournament win.“I think we came in with a different mentality this past weekend,” Hickey said. “This spring, we had the mentality that we would work hard in every practice and refuse to lose. After this weekend, we know what it takes for us to win.”A big part of what it takes for the Badgers to win is the solid performance of their libero Hickey, who currently ranks third in the Big Ten in digs per set with 4.88.Hickey is quick to point out, however, that the success did not occur right away.“When we were at NC State, I was struggling a little bit getting to the ball on digs,” Hickey said. “I just needed reassurance from my coaches. They believe in me, and I know my teammates believe in me too. So after a couple days of practice, I just changed my mentality to knowing I could do it. But there are struggles adjusting to a new role, but I’m getting there.”Wisconsin will most likely face its strongest opponent in Western Michigan and its terrific libero sophomore Lena Oliver, who averages over seven digs per set. Oliver and the Broncos are off to their best start in 25 years, riding a six-match win streak into the tournament. With the InnTowner Invitational being the last set of matches before the start of Big Ten play, the Badgers will focus on cleaning up the errors that plagued them throughout the Rhode Island Invitational.“You always want to limit your errors,” head coach Pete Waite said. “This is a sport where you serve it out of bounds and it’s a point for the other team. You really have to keep your errors down, and the biggest focus is the unforced errors. There are some errors that will happen because the other team did something great. If it’s you who’s making the error whether it’s a service error or hitting the ball out of bounds, we have to improve those areas to have a much better chance of winning every match we play.”All things aside, it simply feels good to be back home for the Badgers.“”Even when we were coming home this weekend, I was excited to go back home and play at the Field House,” Hickey said. “It’s always so much fun, and the atmosphere and fans are great.”last_img read more

Hailie Deegan shares story about costly fuel mistake on Twitter

first_imgJust hear me out and give me your opinion 😂— Hailie Deegan (@HailieDeegan) April 4, 2019People responding to the post wrote that the $14,000 quote she mentioned was likely for a full engine replacement. Diesel engines and gasoline really don’t mix. Fortunately for Deegan, her driving skills are superior to her refueling skills. She has a win and two top-fives in three starts in the K&N Pro Series this year. The win came on a last-lap pass at Las Vegas in February. She also earned a win last September as a 16-year-old.Deegan was voted K&N Pro Series West Rookie of the Year for 2018. Hailie Deegan is one of the top driver prospects in stock car racing, but she recently experienced a big-time fuel problem off the track. The 17-year-old Deegan relayed a story Wednesday on Twitter about a “big mistake” she made during a trip to a gas station in her home state, California. WrestleMania rumor roundup: 10 biggest WWE rumors for WrestleMania 35

first_imgRumors have been flying about the status of the former UFC champion. The Wrestling Observer reported back in January that Rousey would be leaving after WrestleMania, and Pro Wrestling Sheet added that she told WWE around Survivor Series that she would be taking a hiatus to start a family. WWE told TMZ that Rousey’s contract doesn’t expire until April 10, 2021, so she even if she doesn’t wrestle for the foreseeable future, “The Baddest Woman on the Planet” isn’t leaving. WRESTLEMANIA 35Match card | Schedule | Buy PPV & tickets2. What would Rousey’s rumored hiatus mean to the main event’s results? Currently, the former 15-time WWE champion isn’t scheduled to be on the show. The Wrestling Observer  claims Cena does have some type of role. What he will do is anyone’s guess as WWE is allegedly keeping it top secret with only a few select knowing. It seemed Cena would be involved in the Baron Corbin and Kurt Angle feud. While people have been cheering for Cena any time Corbin is on Monday Night Raw, that isn’t likely to occur unless McMahon changes his tune. WWE hasn’t even brought up Cena’s name on any of their programming. Elias could be someone Cena meets up with on the show. The former mentioned in an interview on Sirius XM’s Busted Open that he would like for Cena to come down and interrupt his musical performance. It’s hard to see Cena in a match that hasn’t been promoted. He’s one of their biggest stars, and you would want to give it ample promotional time even though the Observer threw out Lars Sullivan’s name as a possibility. They were rumored for the show early this year until Sullivan took a leave of absence.SN Q&A: Rob Van Dam talks return to Impact Wrestling, Vince McMahon, more4. Kofi Kingston not Daniel Bryan’s original foe Even though Asuka wasn’t featured as much after retaining the Smackdown women’s championship over Lynch at the Royal Rumble in January, a title defense at WrestleMania looked to be a sure thing. The Wrestling Observer noted she was scheduled to either face Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville in a three-way match or a one-on-one bout with Rose. However, as The Observer also reported, on the March 26 of Smackdown, McMahon decided to take the belt off of Asuka and put on Flair to add that title to match which now is “Winner Take All.”Instead of having a proper role at WrestleMania, the Japanese star now gets her role reduced and is in the Women’s Battle Royal to likely occur on the pre-show. But will she make her presence felt in the main event anyway? Hmm …7. What’s up with The Rock? WWE Ever since All Elite Wrestling became an official promotion, The Usos were rumored to be a candidate to join the upstart promotion and have a potential feud with The Young Bucks.  PWInsider stated their contracts were set to expire at the end of April. But the current SmackDown tag team champions aren’t going anywhere. PWInsider reported on Wednesday that the brothers signed new deals “several weeks back.” Jimmy and Jey defended their belts at WrestleMania against Black, Ricochet, The Bar and Rusev and Shinsuke Nakamura.10. Is Dean Ambrose really leaving? Right now, Kingston is the most popular male in the WWE leading into the bout with WWE champion Daniel Bryan due to the booking of being in the underdog role much like Bryan was when he won the WWE belt at WrestleMania 30. Kingston’s had quite the journey to get to this point, but The New Day member wasn’t earmarked for the spot.WrestleVotes reported in February that Kevin Owens was going to return from double-knee surgery and take on Bryan. After the fan reaction to Kingston’s performance at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view where it came down to him and Bryan followed by the subsequent performance two days later on Smackdown Live, Post Wrestling says McMahon switched gears to Kingston.SN Q&A: Charlotte Flair talks all-women WrestleMania 35 main event5. No Undertaker? Since WrestleMania VII in 1991, The Undertaker has only missed one WrestleMania. That was WrestleMania 16 in 2000 because of injury. When you think of “The Showcase of the Immortals,” one of the first names to roll off the tongue is “The Deadman.” As of this writing, no role has been set with him. However,  PWInsider reports multiple sources have told them The Undertaker would be in the state of New Jersey where WrestleMania takes place, while The Wrestling Observer says higher-ups in WWE have them saying he won’t be on the show. While The Undertaker had below-level matches the last two years with Roman Reigns and John Cena, it would be weird not to have him be in a segment in an event he helped put on the map.6. Asuka’s role change Around this time of year, The Rock showing up WrestleMania is a hot topic of conversation. The will he or won’t he game is played until WrestleMania ends. The former WWE champion hasn’t appeared since WrestleMania 32 when he beat Erick Rowan in six seconds and then did a segment with Cena, where the superstars beat up The Wyatt Family. On a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio , Dave Meltzer said The Rock is one of the names who has been discussed to be in the segment with Elias, who has called The Rock out in the past. Will it happen? Who knows, but it’s always good to talk about The Rock.8. The Revivial’s tag team title plans Join DAZN and watch more than 100 fight nights a yearAs big of an event as Wrestlemania has become, a ton of speculation comes along with it. WWE Chairman Vince McMahon has been known to change to his mind on a whim, evidenced by Asuka losing the Smackdown women’s belt to Charlotte last Tuesday in what was reportedly a last-second decision.Lots of rumors have been floating around. Here are the Top 10 rumors heading into Wrestlemania 35. 1. Ronda Rousey’s future WrestleMania 35 takes place on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. At this time, 17 matches are on the docket, headlined by a Triple Threat match for the Raw and Smackdown Live women’s titles, when Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch square off in the main event. For the last month, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder have been in a program with Ricochet and Aleister Black. Everything pointed to the feud ending with them at WrestleMania considering they went to a double count out on Raw this past Monday. But in a strange turn of events, WWE released a video of a backstage segment between the champs and Zach Ryder and Curt Hawkins. The Wrestling Observer reported plans were being shifted to that match happening and Ricochet and Black were shifted to the SmackDown tag team title bout. The Observer also states Ryder and Hawkins were set to break their losing streak and get the win at WrestleMania, but that remains to be seen if it happens.9. The Usos staying in WWE (WWE) If Rousey’s planned hiatus pans out being true, it should directly affect the WrestleMania 35 main event. Will WWE decide to put the belts on Flair or Lynch as a direct result?MORE: How WaleMania became WrestleMania weekend’s most anticipated event3. Is John Cena wrestling? The wrestling world received a major surprise at the end of the January when PWTorch reported, and WWE confirmed in a statement that the former WWE champion would be leaving the company when his contract expires this month. Fans instantly couldn’t believe a top WWE star would choose to leave the premiere wrestling organization. Ambrose doesn’t play to the beat of everybody else’s drum, though. Since the announcement, he was in the main event of March’s Fastline PPV when The Shield reunited to beat Corbin, Bobby Lashley and Drew McIntyre. Except for getting destroyed in two matches with McIntyre on Raw, Ambrose’s appeared in house shows and in spots after Raw ends. He isn’t scheduled to be on WrestleMania, which gives further credence to him possibly leaving the company and not wrestling Sunday night.last_img read more

Brooks’ goal happened just like in a dream

first_imgUnited States’ John Brooks celebrates scoring his side’s second goal during the group G World Cup soccer match between Ghana and the United States at the Arena das Dunas in Natal, Brazil, Monday, June 16, 2014. The United States defeated Ghana 2-1. (AP Photo/Hassan Ammar)NATAL, Brazil (AP) — Smiling ear to ear after winning a World Cup match with his first international goal, John Brooks had a story to share.“I told some teammates that I dreamed that I scored in the 80th minute and we won the game,” he said. “And now it was the 86th minute and we won.”One of the surprise picks by U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann, Brooks hadn’t been in the starting lineup for the Americans’ World Cup opener against Ghana. But after central defender Matt Besler felt tightness in his right hamstring during the final five minutes of the first half, Klinsmann sent the 21-year-old Brooks on for the start of the second.Just four minutes after Andre Ayew’s 82nd-minute goal wiped out a lead Clint Dempsey had given the U.S. just 29 seconds in, Brooks outjumped Ghana’s John Boye to meet Graham Zusi’s corner kick and bounced an 8-yard header past goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey.Overcome with emotion, Brooks ran in disbelief, slumped to the ground arms first and felt teammates pile onto him. When they finally moved off, he put both hands to his lips and blew a kiss.Brooks thought back to two nights earlier and the dream. It also was on a header. From a corner kick.Just liked it happened.“It was unbelievable,” Brooks said. “I couldn’t believe it.”United States’ John Brooks, second from left, scores his side’s second goal during the group G World Cup soccer match between Ghana and the United States at the Arena das Dunas in Natal, Brazil, Monday, June 16, 2014. Among the five German-Americans on the 23-man roster, Brooks made his national team debut last August and had only four appearances entering the World Cup. He was benched twice last season by Hertha Berlin, his club in the German Bundesliga, for a poor performance in December and being unable to train in April because he was hampered by a tattoo on his back.“With John, I saw, we saw, very early that his passing is amazing. He’s very calm for his age. Obviously he’s very strong in the air because he’s so tall,” Klinsmann said. “This is what you read, then you have to figure out is he ready for such a big thing like a World Cup already or maybe does it take another year or two in his development?”Klinsmann consulted with Hertha coach Jos Luhukay and sporting director Michael Preetz.“They expected more from him the last season. There he got a little bit of a lesson from his coach,” Klinsmann said. “It’s part of growing, as well. But we knew that if we had the time now for more than a month to work him through every training session, to teach him some elements of the game, that he’s willing to take that on and learn it quickly. And obviously he learned it quickly.”As the American Outlaws chanted their way out of the stadium, Brooks missed the chance to meet Vice President Joe Biden when he visited the locker room. Brooks and Jermaine Jones had been chosen for random drug tests.Brooks, who lives in Berlin and has family in Chicago, has only visited the U.S. for training camps and vacation. But speaking one day in California last month, he said, “When I’m here, I’m a full American. I play with heart for America.”He had nerves initially Monday, yet is thrilled with how things ended.“I think the first goal was perfect, a perfect start. Couldn’t be better,” Brooks said.Nearly two hours after the final whistle, Brooks was among the last U.S. players to leave the locker room. Someone asked whether he thinks he will start against Portugal on Sunday.“I don’t expect anything,” he said. “I just give my best in every training session, and we’ll see.”NOTES: The team returned to its base camp of Sao Paulo and U.S. F Jozy Altidore was scheduled to have his injured left hamstring examined Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Neil Buethe said. Altidore was hurt in the first half and replaced by Aron Johannsson.last_img read more
