Gardaí issue fresh appeal for witnesses to Porthall crash

first_imgGardaí have appealed for information about a road traffic accident near Porthall on Saturday evening that resulted in a car entering the water.At around 6.30pm, a couple’s Nissan Qashkai left the road and careered into the ‘Suile Burn’ on the main Lifford to St Johnston road.Gardaí, the Fire Service, ambulances and the Rescue 118 helicopter all arrived on the scene. The road was closed until Sunday afternoon to allow Garda forensics officers carried out an investigation of the scene.The man and woman were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital.A number of civilians came to the rescue. One man, whose identity remains unknown, went into the water and helped the woman out of the vehicle while she was pulled ashore by a group of young men on the river bank.Gardaí have urged those who were present to come forward. “Particularly, we would like to speak to the people who helped to flag down the other cars,” Inspector Michael Harrisson said.“We didn’t get the names because it was a volatile situation. There was at least one gentleman who flagged cars down. We want to find out what he saw and we would appeal for him to make contact with us.“There was quite a large crowd around so anyone who has anything to offer, please get in touch.“These people went above and beyond the call of duty.“We just need to put things together and know what happened. We have a duty to investigate and part of that is to get as many witness statements as we can.
