Using a Tankless Water Heater for Space Heat

first_imgYou can buy a gas-fired tankless water heater for $600 — or even $300, if you want a bare-bones model. These appliances are remarkable: they are compact enough to hang on a wall and can begin producing an “endless” flow of hot water almost instantly. Many people look at these small appliances and think, “Why can’t I use one to heat my house?”The answer is, you can. However, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.It’s true that a tankless water heater can easily heat most single-family homes. It’s also true that a tankless water heater is smaller and less expensive than a boiler or a furnace. So what’s the catch?There are several catches, and the issue is fairly complex. The basic problem is that tankless water heaters need a high firing rate — as high as 180,000 BTU/h — to quickly bring cold tap water up to 120°F or 140°F. These appliances work best when the incoming water temperature is relatively low (below 85°F). Tesla And The Fallacy Of Data-Driven Decisions

In fact, we’ve created a giant new industry frenetically panning for Big Data gold. A healthy $4.5 billion market in 2010, according to IDC, Big Data is set to explode to $23.8 billion in 2016, fueled by our need to be more data-driven in everything from how we do business to how we eat.I suspect, however, that we’re fooling ourselves, as the recent Tesla debacle suggests. As much as we’d like to smugly pat ourselves on the back for being data-driven, the truth is that data is always messy, and never really tells any particular story.(See also Would You Buy A Tesla Model S?)Bigger Data ≠ Bigger AnswersNew York Times columnist David Brooks nails this in an op-ed piece, wherein he argues that Big Data, while very useful for guiding our intuitions, gets some things very wrong. Like the value of social connections. Or the context for answering a question. In fact, he speculates, Big Data might actually obscure Big Answers by complicating decisions and making it even harder to determine which statistically signifiant correlations between data are informative and not simply spurious.Such thinking won’t be surprising to anyone that has read Nassim Taleb’s book The Black Swan, which posits that the more data we analyze, the more likely our conclusions will be wrong. Taleb writes:In business and economic decision-making, data causes severe side effects – data is now plentiful thanks to connectivity; and the share of spuriousness in the data increases as one gets more immersed into it. A not well-discussed property of data: it is toxic in large quantities – even in moderate quantities.In other words, the more data you collect, the harder it can become to interpret that data. And even if you can interpret your data correctly, are you actually going to listen to that interpretation?Which brings us to Tesla. Tesla and “Truth”In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, a New York Times reporter, John Broder, wrote an unflattering review of Tesla’s new Model S. Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk got the knives out and slammed the reporter using a pile of data (from the reporter’s test drive, which is a little bit creepy). Broder responded with his own view of the data, and finally Margaret Sullivan, public editor of the Times, waded in. Her conclusion?People will go on contesting these points – and insisting that they know what they prove — and that’s understandable. In the matter of the Tesla Model S and its now infamous test drive, there is still plenty to argue about and few conclusions that are unassailable.But wait! What about all that data Musk collected? Doesn’t it prove his point? Or what about Broder’s own data? Doesn’t it prove his? In both cases the answer is “Yes,” leaving would-be Tesla buyers like ReadWrite’s Dan Lyons stymied as to what they should do. Which is why being “data-driven” is the start of a solution, not the end. The Human Side of Big DataAs David Brooks notes, reviewing Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Blink, “We have the capacity to sift huge amounts of information, blend data, isolate telling details and come to astonishingly rapid conclusions, even in the first two seconds of seeing something.” This is not to suggest that we shouldn’t collect data, but that we perhaps need to be smarter about how we analyze it, and how much we trust it.As I’ve argued (see Big Data And The Landfills Of The Digital Enterprise), I don’t think this is a matter of hiring expensive data scientists to interpret our data. Rather, I imagine it’s a matter of guiding our decisions – even those split-second “hunches” that Gladwell talks about in Blink – through data, without becoming consumed with data. Data kicks off the right questions; data doesn’t resolve disputes.Just ask Musk and Broder: both absolutely convinced they’re right, and both with ample data on their respective sides to prove it.Image courtesy of Shutterstock. Alberta adds twoyear sunset clause to bill that would regulate oil shipments

first_imgEDMONTON – Alberta is putting an expiry date on proposed legislation that would allow the province to regulate oil and gas shipments.The government has said it might use such a law against British Columbia if that province continues to block an expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline.Parties on both sides of the house voted on Wednesday to accept an Alberta Party amendment to put a two-year limit on the bill.It proposes that Alberta have the power to restrict and redirect flows of oil, gasoline and natural gas to maximize profits, given the bottlenecks in pipelines.The amendment gives the government the option to extend the bill after the two-year limit, but it would need to go back to the legislature for approval.Energy Minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd told the house that two years is a reasonable time and the amendment doesn’t tie the government’s hands.Premier Rachel Notley has threatened consequences to B.C. for opposing and delaying Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain project.The bill has the potential to cause gasoline and other fuel-related prices to spike in B.C.The dispute is heading for a showdown on May 31. Coach Says Football Player Convicted of Juvenile Rape Earned

Richmond served about 10 months in a juvenile prison in a case that garnered international attention through social media and included allegations of a cover-up to protect a storied high school football team.Pelini told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he gave Richmond a chance after hearing him accept responsibility for his conviction.“I didn’t make this decision lightly,” Pelini said. “He was extremely remorseful. I saw a young man who was desperately wanting to better his life and those of the people around him.”Pelini said Richmond stood out from other 21-year-olds because of his focus, discipline and maturity.Richmond was released in January 2014 and attended colleges in West Virginia and Pennsylvania before transferring to Youngstown State in the fall of 2016 as a sophomore.Richmond and his legal guardians spoke with Pelini and YSU President Jim Tressel about joining the team after he enrolled. Pelini researched Richmond’s past before meeting him, then said he made no promises and told Richmond he’d have to earn good grades and stay out of trouble to be on the team.“He stuck with it,” Pelini said. “He went over and above. He knew he had no room for error.”Richmond began practicing with the team as a defensive end after Youngstown State’s loss in the Football Championship Subdivision title game in January. Pelini said Richmond, a walk-on player with no scholarship, showed talent but was a “work in progress.”When The Youngstown Vindicator wrote a story in August noting that Richmond was on the team, a student circulated a petition calling for the school to bar Richmond from playing football. Youngstown State subsequently sent a university-wide email that said Richmond could continue to practice but could not be on the active roster this season and would lose a year of eligibility.Richmond quit the team after learning of the email and went home to Steubenville, prompting Pelini, another coach, and three teammates to visit him and convince him to return to school.Pelini said he told Richmond during the visit: “You need to get your butt back to campus and trust that things are gonna work out. You can’t walk away from school, you’ve come this far. It’s time to stick it out.”It was a mistake not to publicize Richmond’s place on the team or address concerns earlier, Pelini said.“I’m not stupid,” Pelini said. “I understand that the opportunity to be a part of the team raises questions.”Richmond returned to school. Less than two weeks later, he was in class when he learned his father, 51-year-old Nathaniel Richmond, was killed when he shot a judge in a courthouse parking lot and a probation officer returned fire. Pelini said it was another blow to Richmond, whose once-absent father was becoming more involved in his life.Richmond grew up in a troubled home. He began living off-and-on with his youth football coach, Greg Agresta and Agresta’s wife, Jennifer, when he was 8. They became his legal guardians and mentored him as college coaches began recruiting him in high school.Pelini said Richmond’s rape conviction and the intense public attention sharpened Richmond’s focus and determination to rise above his past.“He’s been through a lot,” Pelini said. “It makes you grow up in a hurry.”The day after Richmond’s lawsuit was filed, a federal judge ruled that Richmond could play for Youngstown State. He got on the field during the second half of a blowout win against Central Connecticut State on Sept. 16, but didn’t play Saturday in a 19-7 win over South Dakota State.“He really puts his nose to the grindstone and brings it every day,” Pelini said. “He understands the scrutiny that goes with this story, that with his background, he can’t make another mistake.” read more
