The premisse given by the clientes was to develop a project with the best cost and benefit relation. However, not giving up a construction with great quality with a contemporary architecture that, at the same time, does not deviate from the other existent houses from the condo, creating a cozy atmosphere. The clients are a young couple with three children. Another thing they asked was to create a house thinking about the children’s conviviality: wide rooms with generous spaces for the children to run and play and with the best view of all the social and external areas so they could keep na eye on them. In function of the requests, restrictions of the condo and limitations of the field with slope, we developed the project.Save this picture!© Adriano EscanhuelaSince the firsts studies, we thought about a L implantation, dividing in two distincts modules, uniting the edifications by the social areas. We located the vertex of the L at the superior right corner of the field and, with that, we could leave a generous space on the center and left side of the field, where we created the pool, sauna, changing room and the garden.Save this picture!Site PlanFor the edification, we opted for brickwork closure that did not need the use of plaster and painting, gerating significant savings in the construction phase and eliminating future repairs. But, for that, it was fundamental to utilize a high quality workmanship because the coatings chosen were external and internal finishing.Save this picture!© Adriano EscanhuelaTherefore we opted to use the apparent structural concrete block in the two-floor module that is destinated to the home theater and two guests suites at the ground floor and one master suite, two bedrooms for the children with a common bathroom and one support suite at the upper floor.Save this picture!© Adriano EscanhuelaAt the social module, only with a ground floor and one meter above the structural module, we used wood structure, demolition brick that we found by the region and tile roofing, creating a conection with the other houses of the condo. To give it a contemporary atmosphere, instead of using a convencional plasterboard lining, we chose to use OSB lining and apparent electrodes for electrical installations.Save this picture!© Adriano EscanhuelaThe social module contemplates: living room, dining room, kitchen, service area, bathroom and service room. The external barbecue area is almost integrated to the kitchen’s counter, only separated by big wood and glass frames. At the external area we created a place for hammocks with a beautiful tree beside the dining table where they can rest after the meals. In front of this area, is the pool with infinity edge and, next to it, the “wood box” that locates the sauna and changing room. We wanted that this “wood box” interfered the less possible on the view, so we buried it on the ground creating a softer and more harmonic volume on the field. That gave us the possibility to use it’s roof for contemplation at night, creating the right spot for the external fireplace, developed by us. As far as we know, the clients love this place, where they can spend the winter nights with the children, telling stories and watching the stars.Save this picture!© Adriano EscanhuelaProject gallerySee allShow lessOMA Unveils Urban Study and Strategy for Manifesta 12 in PalermoArchitecture NewsWhat Construction Can Learn from the Tech Industry’s Economies of ScaleArchitecture News Share ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/874844/kurumim-house-pm-arquitetura-plus-bruno-pimenta Clipboard CopyHouses•Brazil Photographs:  Adriano Escanhuela Manufacturers Brands with products used in this architecture project center_img Area:  500 m² Year Completion year of this architecture project ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/874844/kurumim-house-pm-arquitetura-plus-bruno-pimenta Clipboard 2016 Brazil ArchDaily Houses “COPY” Photographs CopyAbout this officePM Arquitetura + Bruno PimentaOfficeFollowProductsWoodConcreteBrick#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesItuBrazilPublished on July 03, 2017Cite: “Kurumim House / PM Arquitetura + Bruno Pimenta” [Residência Kurumim / PM Arquitetura + Bruno Pimenta] 03 Jul 2017. Fostering Women’s Leadership Starts With Your Friends

first_imgIt turns out the advice is true – breakfast is the most important meal of the day.Last week I joined 650 leaders for breakfast at a meeting of The Boston Club, a community of women executives promoting the advancement of women to significant and visible leadership roles. The Boston Club began as a small but dedicated group that started nearly 40 years ago. It has now grown to an organization of almost 700 members spanning a broad array of industries and professions, as well as business owners and entrepreneurs who connect both as a “club and a cause.” The meeting I attended began at 7:15 on a Friday morning, and you would be surprised how many people enjoy starting the day with a healthy discussion about women’s leadership.I was fortunate enough to sit next to Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, who gave the keynote address to the packed room. Governor Baker, who has direct experience as a Chief Executive Officer in the private sector, encouraged everyone to continue efforts to bring more women into leadership positions. He challenged those who continually question women’s “readiness” to be leaders and cited the valuable asset that women have had for years – our professional networks – as key to advancing the cause.Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker addresses members of The Boston ClubThe governor advised us to “make new friends” who will help us transform the representation of women in leadership positions. Governor Baker described his own journey to increase the number of women in leadership positions in state government (where everything really is political) and how he has learned to ignore differences such as party affiliations to bring in the best candidate, wherever she may be.My next breakfast will feature coffee for 10,000. I’m lucky enough to be attending the Massachusetts Conference for Women, which is held every year in Boston but draws attendees from all over the world. The talent and power in the room is impressive, and it gives me added confidence to know that the advocates for women’s leadership are continuing to grow and strengthen. Conference speakers include thought leaders from corporations, television, fashion, politics and academia, just to name a few.Wherever in the world you are reading this, I hope you will join me in one of my 2016 resolutions: to make new friends, and renew connections with long-standing ones. The Massachusetts Conference for Women is just one opportunity to expand your network, and there are many others throughout the world. Attend one in your area and add your voice and vision to the mix. The impact we can have on women’s leadership is profound, and we can all share in the results of a fully inclusive workplace that we build and sustain together.last_img read more

Cyclists Plan Red Bank Road Race

first_imgBy John BurtonRED BANK – Professional cyclists could be taking competitive laps around the borough this summer, organizers are hoping. The National Cycling Association (NCA) and the USA CRITS Professional Cycling League want borough officials to approve its plan to hold a championship cycling event on Aug. 6 that organizers say would draw roughly 200 professional racing cyclists and more than 5,000 spectators.Organizers have already found a primary sponsor:  Triumph Brewing Company has agreed to support the proposed event, according to Jack Simes, chief executive officer for NCA and producer for Red Bank Championship Cycling. Simes is also the co-founder of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Pro Cycling Championship.Triumph, which has locations in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and Princeton, is constructing a Red Bank site on Bridge Avenue, as part of the West Side Lofts project.Adam Rechnitz, an area resident, is owner and operator of the brewing company, and he and his twin brother, Josh, are both cycling enthusiasts who have thrown their support behind the event, Simes said.Simes said organizers had a meeting with the borough Special Events Committee and organizers are planning to bring a slightly revised plan back to the committee as soon as it can be scheduled. “It’s already 2016 and there’s a lot of planning to do,” Simes pointed out.The committee includes borough administrator Stanley Sickels, a police department representative as well as a representative from the borough council, among others, who evaluate the proposals before making their recommendations and forward them to the mayor and council, who have the final say on approval.Organizers also met with James Scavone and Amanda Lynn, executive director and program manager for Red Bank RiverCenter, respectively, to stress what organizers say will be an economic benefit for the business community. “It was quite well received,” by the RiverCenter representatives, said Simes.RiverCenter is the management and advocacy organization for the borough’s commercial Special Improvement District.“From the meetings we had, they seem genuinely interested in this and having a well run event in Red Bank,” said event director Ryan Oelkers, a former professional racing cyclist who spent 10 years on the race circuit, referring to borough representatives.“We think Red Bank is the perfect venue for the event we want to run there,” Oelkers said. “You have the Navesink River there; you have the bars and restaurants. It just seems like a great fit.”Plans call for the main event staged by USA CRITS, in which racers compete in a .99-mile criterium street event. The races will start and end on Broad Street with the route on Harding Road, Clay Street, Canal Street, Mechanic Street, Globe Court and on to East Front Street, through the borough’s downtown, according to information provided to the special events committee. Those races would take place in the early evening, probably starting at 7 p.m.Criterium racing involves high-speed contests conducted in an active, urban environment. If approved, it will be one of 13 races USA CRITS will hold between March 19 and Sept. 17, from Boston, Massachusetts, to Clearwater, Florida, to Boise, Idaho and St. Louis, Missouri, and are expected to attract some of the best cyclists from around the world. Racers will compete for more than a total of $250,000 in prize money for the series of races. In addition to the main event, organizers are planning supporting activities. There will a “Gran Fondo” (Italian for “Large Ride”), an amateur ride from Red Bank to Freehold and back that would be open to riders of all abilities. In addition, Simes said plans call for an ongoing youth program to promote safety and cycling as a healthy lifestyle activity. “Cycling has proven to be a great activity in fighting childhood obesity,” Simes said. “More so than many other sports.”“This will be something that will be good for business, good for the cafes and restaurants,” with hopes that this will become an annual event, Simes said.Mayor Pasquale Menna said he didn’t have any details about the proposal, but noted a similar annual event held in the borough more than 20 years ago. That event was eventually discontinued because of complaints from residents and businesses, according to the mayor.Neighboring Fair Haven hosted Tour de Fair Haven cycling races for five years but canceled the event after a racer was killed colliding with a race official in 2013.A similar event, the Athens, Georgia, Twilight Criterium, has been held for 30 years. And, according to Oelkers, “It’s their biggest night and day in their calendar year,” of events, a clear success for local businesses.Oelkers also suspected August is a good time for the event, given it’s a traditionally slow period for attractions.last_img read more

UNDEFEATED ECLIPSE CHAMPION NYQUIST TO MAKE 3-YEAR-OLD DEBUT IN MONDAY’S GRADE II, $200,000 SAN VICENTE STAKES AT SEVEN FURLONGS; DESORMEAUX’S EXAGGERATOR TO PROVIDE CHIEF OPPOSITION

first_imgARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 12, 2016)–Reddam Racing’s undefeated Eclipse Champion Nyquist, idle since winning the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Oct. 31, heads a field of six sophomores in Santa Anita’s Grade II, $200,000 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs on Monday.Trained by Doug O’Neill and ridden by Mario Gutierrez in all five of his wins, the Kentucky-bred colt by Uncle Mo, who has also posted victories in the Grade II Best Pal Stakes, Grade I Del Mar Futurity and Grade I FrontRunner Stakes, will attempt to provide the triumvirate of J. Paul Reddam, O’Neill and Gutierrez with a measure of déjà vu, as they also teamed for victory in the 2012 Santa Anita and Kentucky Derbies with I’ll Have Another. While recent stakes wins by top Derby prospects Mohaymen and Mor Spirit have generated considerable early buzz among industry observers, O’Neill remained upbeat this morning regarding Nyquist’s prospects.“We’re just eager to see him compete at a high level on Monday and let that speak for itself,” he said. “That’s what I love about this game, though, everyone has an opinion…Whenever you read something negative about your own horses, it’s like somebody saying something about your family members…But if he runs a big race Monday, we can write our own story.”A winner going seven furlongs in the Del Mar Futurity three starts back on Sept. 7, Nyquist will be shortening up off a pair of wins at a mile and a sixteenth, in both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Santa Anita’s FrontRunner Stakes Sept. 26. His career earnings of $1,613,600 dwarf those of the rest of the San Vicente field.Big Chief Racing’s Exaggerator, idle since winning the Grade III, 1 1/16 miles Delta Jackpot over a muddy strip on Nov. 21, was a close fourth, beaten three lengths, by Nyquist in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and will unquestionably be the second choice in the San Vicente wagering. Trained by Keith Desormeaux, the Kentucky-bred colt by Curlin demonstrated a stalking style in winning the Grade II, 6 ½ furlong Saratoga Special four starts back on Aug. 16 and could likely employ similar tactics off the bench.A winner of three out of his six starts, he’ll be ridden by Desormeaux’s Hall of Fame brother, Kent, for the fourth consecutive time. Exaggerator has a solid work tab for his return that includes a bullet five furlong move in 58.20 here on Feb. 2. A well beaten fifth by Nyquist in his maiden special weight debut at Santa Anita June 5, he has earnings of $983,120.Trainer Wesley Ward will be represented by Florida-bred Sheikh of Sheikhs, comes off a third place finish in the Grade III, six furlong Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream on Jan 2. Owned by Abdullah Saeed Almaddah, Sheikh of Sheikhs, who has a pair of sprint victories from four starts, will be making his Southern California debut.
