Witness Contradicts Medical Council

first_imgDoctor Vuyu Kanba Golakai, the vice president and Dean of AM Dogliotti College of Medicine at the University of Liberia (UL), yesterday told Civil Law Court ‘A’ that the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) did not authorize Dr. Nyaquoi Kargbo’s committee to probe the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFKMC).Dr. Golakai’s testimony contradicted the LMDC’s claim that the hospital was responsible for the death of Rep. Edward Forh’s daughter Nakita.Dr. Golakai testified as defense expert witness, but alleged that the Dr. Kargbo Committee’s recommendation was never accepted by members of the LMDC, and that such a report should not have been used by Rep. Forh to institute a US$25 million lawsuit against the JFK.Dr. Kargbo, the Registrar General of the council, and another doctor only identified as Pewee, was the pair that investigated several medical doctors assigned at the JFKMC including its Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Billy Johnson, Dr. David Okoru and nursing staff. They then forwarded a recommendation calling for strong punishment against those they investigated. The Kargbo Committee claimed that the health workers were liable for Nakita’s death, which they described as “negligence.”It was based on that report that Rep. Forh instituted a US$25 million negligence lawsuit against the hospital for damages. In his testimony, Dr. Golakai said whenever a committee is set up to investigate such professional matters, their findings and recommendations are expected to be approved by members of the LMDC, which he claimed did not happen in Kargbo’s case.According to Dr. Golakai, the procedure used by the LMDC chairman to appoint members of the committee was contrary to their normal practice. He said that LMDC’s procedures stipulate that a member serving on an investigative committee should be an official on the Grievance and Ethics Committee, of which he alleged Kargbo and Pewee were not members.“They ignored the functions of the Grievance and Ethics Committee and did their own thing,” the expert witness claimed.“The chairman erred to have appointed both Kargbo and Pewee, who were not statutory members of the LMDC that would have made an important decision for the council,” he alleged, adding, “they were only administrative staff, and should not have been on any committee to investigate that matter.”According to Dr. Golakai, their chairman also erred to have constituted a two-member investigative committee.“Our policies provide that investigative committees should constitute three or more members, and not two,” Golakai told the court. He denied that the report was presented to the LMDC for discussion on its merits and demerits.“The LMDC did not evaluate the draft report before it reached the public,” he said.“They released the report without being given the authority to do so. Those were some of the concerns we raised as council members, and they are yet to address them before the matter reached this far,” Golakai told the court.Besides, he claimed that the report was marred by several ethical breaches.Nakita Forh, who was asthmatic, was on September 26, 2014 taken to the JFK, to use its nebulizer (oxygen) to help stabilize her breathing condition, and was allegedly refused service. She later died on the hospital’s compound for which her father is seeking US$25 million as damages. The case continues.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Harrison to make return to ring

first_imgAudley Harrison is to return to boxing in a 10-rounder against Chelsea’s Ali Adams in Brentwood on 14 April. It will be the Wembley heavyweight’s first fight since losing a one-sided world title clash with David Haye in November 2010.Harrison, 40, was crowned Olympic champion in 2000 but has been much maligned during his professional career, and the third-round stoppage by Haye was his fifth defeat.“Anyone can lose but I didn’t lose with dignity. I was never going to retire after that performance,” said Harrison.“I’ll have too much for Ali Adams. I intend to show I still have a future in the game.”Adams, who was born in Iraq, is 10 years younger than Harrison and has a record of 13-3-1.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img

JS-Kit’s New Blog Comment Platform Enters Public Beta

first_imgAfter a short private beta test, JS-Kit just announced that Echo, its new blog commenting platform, is now available as a public beta. Echo aggregates conversations around a blog post from across the Internet and allows users to share their comments on Twitter, Facebook, and FriendFeed. Echo offers a number of well-designed and unique features, including real-time updating and the ability to capture social gestures related to a blog’s content like star ratings and ‘likes’ from across the Web. In addition, at least for the time being, JS-Kit also offers good spam and obscenity filters.Easy InstallationInstalling Echo is just as easy as installing the plugins of its competitors like Intense Debate or Disqus – which is dealing with a major spam problem these days. JS-Kit provides plugins for WordPress and Blogger, as well as a code-snippet for other blogging platforms. The Best Things in Life Aren’t FreeIt’s important to point out, though, that the most interesting features, including real-time updates and comment aggregation from third-party sites like Twitter and FriendFeed are not available in the free version of Echo. The free version includes most of the core features of Echo, including the ability to share comments on Twitter and Facebook, nested replies, moderation tools, and customization. For $98 a year, paying users will get access to Echo’s aggregation features and real-time updates. JS-Kit also offers a white-label solution with priority support, as well as OEM integration. It’s good to see some development in the blog commenting market again. After a flurry of announcement and product releases last year, development and new product releases markedly slowed down this year, even though the growth of Twitter and Facebook only intensified the problem of comment fragmentation. frederic lardinois Tags:#Product Reviews#web A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts center_img 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostinglast_img read more
