Pasadena Conservancy Sponsors Madison Elementary Garden and Orchard

BOUTON/dpb PHOTOGRAPHY Published on Thursday, March 3, 2016 | 4:17 pm Subscribe First Heatwave Expected Next Week Members of Pasadena Community Gardens Conservancy, a “homegrown” foundation of local philanthropists, have invested $25,000 to sponsor a garden and orchard at Madison Elementary School in Northwest Pasadena. The Conservancy Board of Directors recently joined by Mayor Terry Tornek, Pasadena Educational Foundation officials, and representatives of Pasadena Unified School District for a combination groundbreaking/grand opening, with parents, pupils teachers, and school board members wielding shovels and trowels.Mayor Tornek called the opening of the garden a “groundbreaking event,” intending his pun in praise of the collaboration between the school district, the venerable schools foundation, and the small, local foundation. The Madison garden is the second for PCGC, which aims to build ten community gardens in Pasadena in ten years. PCGC is the co-founder and co-funder of the Villa-Parke Community Garden, which provides 30 gardening spaces for underserved families with children living in apartments in Northwest’s ‘food desert’ neighborhoods, as well as a garden for 80 Head Start families to share.Madison has been an under-performing school, with many low-income immigrant families who qualify for Title 1 benefits, and a low level of parent-participation. It is hoped that the garden will encourage parent-involvement through volunteering at the garden, and through bilingual cooking and nutrition classes held at PUSD’s Healthy Start Family Center, located next door. Gardening – or “applied botany,” as gardeners like to call it – will be part of the pre-science curriculum for all grades at the school, kindergarten through fifth. Madison teachers are being trained in a new California Department of Education-certified classroom curriculum called “Farm to School,” using the garden to engage students in plant science, pre-botany, nutrition, harvesting, recycling, and composting. Students, teachers, and parents will visit the Huntington Library, local community gardens, and local farms. The main garden measures 40 feet square and includes large plots for each grade level to care for, and to learn from. A separate kindergarten area incorporates and “revives” a 14-foot-long garden bed that was once planted by the Pasadena Junior League. The orchard includes a 36 fruit-bearing trees, including plum, peach, orange, tangerine, lemon, lime, Anna apple, and kiwi. Families and neighbors are invited to pick from the fruit trees, making the Madison garden a resource for the entire neighborhood.Part of PCGC’s donation includes teak benches and tables to enable students to learn outdoors next to the garden, and event in collaboration with the Madison PTC, including an Earth Day celebration and a Harvest Day celebration. A committee of volunteers from PCGC, headed by Adele Binder and Bea Bennett, already have begun a program of reading aloud to second graders each week from gardening and planting books for children.‘Nuestra visión es que el jardín será “un jardín de la paz” para todos. Un jardin de la paz por la escuela, y un jardin de la paz para todo la communidad. Para todos ustedes y sus hijos y sus nietos,” said the Conservancy’s President, Eileen White Read, at the opening. (Our vision is that this garden will be a ‘garden of peace’ for everyone. A garden of peace for your school, and a garden of peace for the entire community… for all of you, and your children, and your grandchildren.)The Madison project is headed for PCGC by Dr. Stephanie Hall and Charise Stewart, a Pasadena attorney. Beth Hansen, President of Mallcraft, is Chair of PCGC. BetRegal diary – Defining our go to market strategy

first_imgShare StumbleUpon Share Former Pinnacle Marketing Director Aly Lalani is one of the drivers behind the launch of, a new European facing sportsbetting and gaming brand created to provide its customers with the “best possible value” in prices. After creating the brand, Lalani is back to share his experiences about the challenges of bringing a new brand to the market.Having worked out ‘the initial ideas of what the brand will look like to the customer, and having a very general idea of where we were going to find our customer, the discussion naturally evolved to us trying to define a go to market strategy for BetRegal. We have options here, right? My partners and I have all had lots of experience working with and for some of the largest sportsbooks in the industry, and we have access to infrastructure that would make it a viable option to build our product internally. I mean, building it specifically to our own spec has to be the best option right? That way we get exactly what we want. The downside? It takes time. We’re talking about a pretty complicated risk management platform, along with a brand new front end, ability to integrate payment providers, customer service infrastructure, fraud infrastructure, and a whole bunch of other elements that a non-technical person like myself wouldn’t understand. Not to mention the ever changing world of compliance.Back to the bar.In all seriousness, this requires a serious strategic discussion. Are we willing to wait X months (or years) to build our own platform? What are our other options? What are the cost and resource implications? Through lots of discussion, and with varied levels of disagreement, the decision was made as a group that our strategy would be to try to get to market as quickly as possible with a quality product, and begin building the brand in our key markets. Of course that means we will have to sacrifice a little in terms of ultimate desired functionality, but the plan all along was to continually evolve the website based on market desires and influences. Remember, we defined our mandate as being for the customer…it makes sense that we use their input to improve our customer experience.Anyone who has been to any of the conferences over the past couple of years has seen the increase in software providers. Now some of the biggest stands and the biggest brands are software providers, who make it especially easy for new brands to get off the ground by providing a lot of the required infrastructure.   We set initial meetings with all of the larger software providers, and some of the smaller ones, at ICE in February of last year. Anyone that has visited this particular exhibition will understand the jostling for position and near frenzied desire to attract new business at the ExCeL. With a keen eye on our intended differentiator of having the ability to manage our odds pricing to a very granular level, we reviewed most, if not all of the software providers. After much deliberation, we decided in the end to use the EveryMatrix platform. After 13 years in the iGaming space, I was in a better position than most to cut through the noise. I was already aware of the sportsbook solution offered by EveryMatrix, and some of the companies they had helped to bring quickly and effectively to market, but I was immediately taken by the platform’s granular margin management. Now admittedly, no one platform was ideal for our needs. All required some sort of compromise. That was the sacrifice we made with the decision to get to market quickly. Fortunately, our most important BetRegal brand feature is still fully under our control. We are going to treat these customers like royalty. I feel confident in saying we will have significantly more customer service staff than other operators at the same stage in their life cycle.EveryMatrix seemed to offer the type of product we needed to aggressively manage our pricing model, along with all the other operational requirements to get to market relatively quickly. It looks like EveryMatrix is the right provider for us.At the end of the day, the software is only a tool, choosing one over the other doesn’t guarantee success. It just positions us to better control our intended differentiator. We need to develop a quality, engaging product and get some players in the front door. The only way we can ever be competitive in terms of our pricing is with liquidity. The more liquidity we get, the more we can move towards our goal of offering the ‘best value for the customer’.It’s exciting to know that we have a backend supplier chosen for’s design our product and figure out how to get some players! Chelsea 2-1 Man United: Blues’ dramatic comeback!

first_imgA first Chelsea goal from David Luiz ensured that Carlo Ancelotti’s side still have a slim hope of retaining the Premier League title after Wayne Rooney had given Manchester United the lead in West London. Frank Lampard completed the recovery with a second half spot kick which keeps United’s lead at four points ahead of Arsenal in second spot.Chelsea could have made the breakthrough on two occasions in the opening moments, after Fernando Torres was denied his first goal for the club following a foul inside the penalty box, with the referee having penalised fellow January signing Luiz for a tug.And the hosts could have found the net after five minutes, when a run down the right from Ramires was closely checked by United’s John O’Shea, but the Irishman couldn’t stop the ball continuing for Nicolas Anelka. He delivered a cross which Florent Malouda fired in from the edge of the area. The shot was aimed directly at Edwin van der Sar, but the lack of defenders in Malouda’s vicinity was not encouraging for United fans.As the half progressed, both sides had spells in which the opening goal could have been scored. Both Anelka and Rooney dragged shots wide from long range efforts. In an even contest like this, chances need to be taken, and as the 30 minute mark approached it was the visitors who took theirs after an overlapping run from Patrice Evra opened an avenue for Nani to explore. The Portuguese winger’s run drew sufficient attention from the Chelsea defence to allow Rooney space, and after Nani moved the ball onto him, the England striker turned to face goal and let rip a right footed shot from the edge of the box which beat Petr Cech low to his right. There was much derision from the home support as they felt Rooney shouldn’t have even been on the field following his indiscretion at Wigan on Saturday. No matter, Rooney was available for selection and Sir Alex couldn’t have cared one jot. And the United boss had more reasons to be cheerful when Van der Sar showed he’s still got it with a couple of quick and instinctive saves from close range. Lampard launched a free-kick in from the Chelsea right which flew to the far post where Branislav Ivanovic prodded the ball goalwards only to see the panther-like Van der Sar keep him at bay.It was a close as Ancelotti’s men had come to levelling up the game but as the players returned to the dressing room, United looked like extending their lead at the top of the table.Chelsea needed a response. They came out for the second half with determination and guile and this paid dividends as Luiz reclaimed parity with his first goal for the club.A cleared ball from the United defence was scooped up by Michael Essien who delivered the ball back into the danger area where Ivanovic flicked the ball onto Luiz, who with an excellent volley, smashed the ball into the left corner of Van der Sar’s goal and give the Blues a way back into the contest. With the scores level, the game truly opened up and chances were in abundance. Rooney could have had another had his errant shot been remotely on target after 64 minutes. Gary Neville, who was with the United fans in the Shed End was cursing his former colleague. Shortly after, an error by Michael Carrick could have been punished had Malouda made more of the chance. Carrick would have been sighing with relief after Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling combined to nullify the threat. With the game standing all square, the changes began. Didier Drogba was on for Nicolas Anelka, Dimitar Berbatov replaced Chicarito. Yury Zhirkov came on for Malouda. But most noteworthy was Ryan Giggs making his record equalling 606th league appearance for Manchester United when he replaced another stalwart, Paul Scholes. In neat piece of symmetry, Giggs was equalling the record of Sir Bobby Charlton who made his 606th and final league appearance on the same ground, and 20 years and one day since he made his debut for the Red Devils. With time waning the game sprung another surprise, a contentious foul conceded by Smalling on Zhirkov gave Chelsea the chance to take the lead. Lampard stepped up and thundered the ball straight down the middle to give Ancelotti’s men the lead for the first time.To compound matters for United, captain Vidic received a second yellow card in the dying moments for a foul on Ramires; suffering a suspension which will rule him out of the weekend’s clash with Liverpool At half time Ferguson would have been happy and settled with the game, but a second half revival from Chelsea keeps the title race alive, but only just.Source: Goal.comlast_img read more

College World Series weather update: Rain postpones Mississippi State vs. Vanderbilt game

first_imgThere is always a chance of weather messing with the College World Series, and that’s exactly what happened Tuesday.Louisville and Auburn has been delayed by rain in the top of the fifth inning with the Cardinals up 4-1. The 2018 College World Series was a rough season for weather, as NCAA official Randy Buhr called it “the most challenging College World Series as it pertains to inclement weather.”There were five days which featured either delayed or postponed games in 2018.To this point in 2019, no game has been delayed or postponed, but Tuesday may very well be the day that is disrupted by the weather. There was a 90 percent chance of precipitation coming into the day in Omaha, Nebraska for the day and it has influenced one game already. And now the game scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday between Mississippi State and Vanderbilt has been pushed back to Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.Our #CWS matchup with Vanderbilt has been postponed until Wednesday (June 19) afternoon.#HailState🐶 | #OmaDawgs— OmaDawgs ⚾️ (@HailStateBB) June 18, 2019The weather looks pretty good for Wednesday in Omaha as there is a 20 percent chance of rain before 8 a.m. CT, but it is supposed to clear up after that. Thursday is supposed to be nice as well during the day, but the night could be an issue. There is a 20 percent chance of rain Thursday and 60 percent on Friday. It’s supposed to rain for much of the day Friday.Weather in the great plains can certainly be finicky. From 1991 to 2015, the state of Nebraska was hit by an average of 54.6 tornados per year, which was tied with Florida for the fourth most in the nation. The most common time for those storms are the months of May and June.last_img read more
